A music conference that brought together ministers, musicians, and all those who dedicate their creativity to God took place on March 14 at Bryte Church in Sacramento. The event was organized by Sergey Yanovsky, head of the Music Department of PCSBA. The conference became an important platform for learning, inspiration, and spiritual renewal.
The program included not only training and practical guidance, but also deep spiritual reflections on the essence of music ministry. Participants noted that they received not only “food for the body,” but also “food for the soul,” which strengthened their inner lives and inspired them for further service.
The conference was opened by the chairman of PCSBA, Alexander Pronin. In his message, he emphasized the importance of choir ministry in churches, highlighting its special role in the spiritual life of believers and in building church unity. He concluded by blessing the conference with prayer, dedicating the entire event to the Lord.
Special attention was given to the presentation by Iosif Nikita, a composer of Christian choral music, author of over 200 works, and conductor of the “Word of Truth” choir (Vancouver, Washington). He emphasized an important idea: talent is only part of the gift given by God—“50% comes from God, and the other 50% is our responsibility: discipline, education, and hard work.” His message reminded participants of the importance of developing their gifts with diligence and dedication. He also shared his experience in composing large choral works, encouraging others not to fear challenges or postpone their calling.
A powerful spiritual message was delivered by Pastor Mikhail Cherenkov, who spoke about the Levitical ministry and the nature of the sacrifice we bring to God. He reminded the audience that true service must be sincere, pure, and devoted—the very best a person can offer to the Lord. He emphasized that a servant must first belong to God to lead others to Him through worship.
A highly practical and valuable part of the conference was a workshop led by sound engineer Alexander Turkach from Rockland Baptist Church. He provided detailed insights into designing church sound systems, proper microphone use, and working with audio mixing consoles. The workshop also addressed common sound issues faced by many churches and offered practical solutions. Participants received useful recommendations applicable to both large venues and smaller congregations, making this session especially practical and beneficial.
Ivan Mileev, a professional conductor and choral instructor, led a master class based on a combined Sacramento choir. In a live format, he demonstrated key principles of working with a choir, focusing on sound, ensemble, vocal balance, and expressive performance. Participants were able not only to observe but also to see in practice how a unified and harmonious sound is formed through precise direction, breath control, dynamics, and articulation. This master class became a valuable experience for both beginners and experienced ministers, highlighting the importance of professionalism, discipline, and a deep understanding of music ministry.
An important idea expressed during the conference was that every participant in music ministry is part of a greater design—a kind of “universal choir” that connects heaven and earth. For many, this became a time of inspiration, inner renewal, and rethinking of their creative journey.
Participants were also inspired by the contribution of Natalia Kapakly, conductor of the “Emmanuel” choir of the First Slavic Baptist Church of Sacramento. Her ministry served as a vivid example of dedication, depth, and excellence in musical service.
At the same time, it was noted that relatively few young people attended the conference. Organizers and participants expressed hope that more youth will take part in future events, recognizing how important guidance, support, and direction are at a young age.
The performance by the Izmailov brothers, professional immigrant musicians from Russia, was a true highlight of the conference. They performed classical Christian hymns — violin accompanied by piano — and presented their project for a future classical music arts center in Sacramento, aimed at fostering musical culture and supporting young performers.
The conference concluded with a solemn altar call service featuring the combined choir of the Pacific Association. This became a special spiritual moment, as participants, through singing, prayer, and the Word, rededicated their gifts and service to the Lord. The powerful sound of the large choir filled the hall with an atmosphere of worship and unity, reminding everyone of the great responsibility and privilege of serving God through music. This moment became not only the culmination of the conference, but also a call to renewed commitment and faithfulness in ministry.
So the music conference became a significant event within the Pacific Association, inspiring participants not to delay the development of their gifts, but to serve God with diligence, dedication, and excellence.
