On August 3rd under the leadership of the Vice-President of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), Ken Weathersby, there was a meeting of leaders of various ethnic backgrounds of America. There were leaders representing Korean, Chinese, Philippine, Japanese, Hmong, Laotian, Asian-Americans of the second generation, Cambodian, Haitians, Hispanic, Jewish, Indian, as well as multi-ethnic associations of churches.
SBC is characterized by diversity of various ethnic groups that minister in different languages. In California alone, each Sunday there are services in over 70 languages of the churches that are part of this convention. The time has come that we do not have to go to other parts of the world to preach the Gospel. These people came to us. They came from Afghanistan, Mongolia, Pakistan, India, Somali, Egypt, and many other countries of the world. The preaching to many of them in their home country would be virtually impossible for us because of the persecution of Christians and a complete prohibition for their existence.
During the meeting, there was a question about involvement of representatives from various nationalities on the board of directors of SBC to influence on the life of the convention. There was an emphasis on the possible involvement of our church members in helping those who suffered various calamities. “Disaster Relief” comes second after “the Red Cross” in the scope of help to people who are in extreme conditions because of fires, earthquakes, floods, etc. There is a great need for people who speak different languages, as well as for biblical counselors.
It was pleasant to get to know the pastors of various conventions, as well as to realize how diverse the family of God's children, the church of Jesus Christ is.
